Hrutafjardara

*****

In cooporation with Angling Service Strengir we can now offer this wonderful fishery for the next six years. It is a medium-size river on the north coast, approximately two-hours' drive from Reykjavik. In the past this river has been the exclusive domain of a group of local anglers. This is the first time rods have been generally available for many years.

Probably the most renowned tenant was Major General R.N. Stewart who wrote Rivers of Iceland in 1950, he had the lease for over 10 years. In his book he describes the river thus:
"The Hrutafjardara from the Foss down, is a delightful mixture of rocky gorges, open flat pols, swirly pools, fast runs, still pools and then opening out for the last two miles into a flat plain of gravel and pasture with several excellent pools until it reaches the long narrow fiord leading to the Arctic Ocean."

The Hrutafjardara produces, on average, 570 salmon per year to three rods. The season runs from 1 July to 20 September, with the prime weeks being late July and August. One of the main attractions is the reasonable number of the larger 2SW salmon caught each season. There is excellent fishing for sea-run Arctic char from 3 to 6 lbs in the lower pools.

There is 9 km of fishing on the main river and 3 km on its tributary, Sika. The main river has 42 pools of varying character. Sika flows through gorges and canyons for most of its length and provides challenging fishing. The two branches join about 1 km from the sea. Fishing is with fly-only.

The lodge is situated overlooking the river in the lower reaches. There are three twin-bedrooms, a sitting room with feature fireplace, kitchen and shared bathroom. Clients have the option of self-catering, or taking the full-service option.
